Soffit: The Horizontal Panel Doing the Ventilation Work

The soffit closes off the underside of the eave so weather, birds, squirrels, and insects can't access the rafter tails or the attic space above. It also runs across the underside of any roof overhang on gable ends, porches, or bay window roofs.


The non-obvious job: most soffit panels are perforated or slotted to let outside air enter the attic. This intake air is one half of the two-part ventilation system that keeps your attic dry. The other half is exhaust at the ridge, peak, or upper-roof vents.


When this intake fails (perforations painted shut, panels covered by retrofit work, insulation blocking the path from inside), the entire ventilation system fails with it. Fascia: The Vertical Board Holding Your Gutters
