How Ice Dams Form on Calgary Homes

The mechanism is straightforward once you see it.


Step 1: Heat escape. 

Warm air from the home rises into the attic. Inadequate insulation or unbalanced ventilation lets that heat reach the underside of the roof deck.


Step 2: Upper roof melt. 

The warm deck melts snow on the upper roof from below. Meltwater runs down the roof surface.

Step 4: Dam formation.

Step 5: Water back-up. 

Meltwater hits the dam and has nowhere to go. It pools behind the dam, finds its way under the shingles (asphalt shingles aren't waterproof from below), and leaks into the home.
